Christmas Ornament Templates

Christmas Ornament Templates

Every December I dig out the same battered shoebox of ornaments, and every year the same complaint surfaces: the store-bought baubles all look identical. Last winter I switched to cutting shapes from Christmas Ornament Templates instead, and the difference showed up fast. A pack of 110 lb cardstock, a decent pair of detail scissors, and a printable outline got me 40 custom pieces in one evening. Downloading the file takes two minutes. Choosing one that suits your material takes longer.

Sizing is the first place people stumble. Most templates are drawn at 3 to 4 inches tall because that fits a standard 2.5-inch ornament hook and a typical branch gap. Scale a file up to 6 inches and the paper droops unless you back it with chipboard. I learned that after a whole tray of cardstock snowflakes folded over on the tree.

Why Printed Christmas Ornament Templates Beat Freehand Cutting

Symmetry is the honest answer. Freehand a star and the points never match; trace a template and every copy is identical, which matters when you're hanging eight of them on one garland. Templates also solve the hanger problem because most files include a punched-hole guide at the balance point. I've tested ornaments where the hole sat a quarter inch off-center, and they hung crooked no matter how I tied the loop.

The printed master earns its keep, too. Print once on 65 lb cardstock, cut it out, and that's your reusable original. Trace it onto felt with a fine-tip fabric marker or onto 1/8-inch basswood with a pencil, and you never touch the printer again. That saves real time when a jam-prone printer refuses to feed heavy stock.

Matching Christmas Ornament Templates to Your Material

Not every file works with every medium, and this is where most Pinterest tutorials quietly fail. A delicate lace snowflake SVG is gorgeous in paper and a nightmare in felt, because the interior cutouts are narrower than a standard needle. I keep separate folders on my desktop for paper-safe and felt-safe designs.

Shrink plasticSimple shape, 3x sizingStandard scissorsSmall vintage-look ornaments

Shrink plastic deserves a warning. It reduces to roughly one-third of its cut size, so a 3-inch template becomes a 1-inch ornament. Print at 3x, or pick a shape with chunky outlines that survive the shrinkage without turning into a blob.

A Workflow That Holds Up Under Deadline

Printing on the correct paper setting matters more than people expect. My first batch came out slightly stretched because the printer defaulted to "fit to page" instead of 100 percent. Always check the scaling setting; a 5 percent stretch is invisible on screen and very visible when two halves of a folded ornament don't line up.

  1. Print your master at 100 percent scale on 65 lb cardstock.
  2. Glue the master to a cereal-box chipboard backing with a glue stick.
  3. Cut the reinforced master once, then trace it as many times as you need.

A chipboard-backed master survives about 30 tracings before the edges fray. That's usually more than enough for one tree, though I've burned through two masters in a season while making ornaments for a school craft fair.

✂️ Note: Test your printer's actual output size before cutting 40 ornaments. Print one page, measure the shape with a ruler, and adjust scaling if it's off by more than 1/8 inch.

The templates you keep matter more than the ones you print. After three seasons, the files I return to are the boring ones: a simple teardrop, a five-point star, a rounded bell. Fancy layered mandalas photograph well, but they take 20 minutes each and rarely survive a toddler’s reach. Save your favorites in a folder named by material, and next December you’ll skip the search entirely.
