Blank Hoodie Template

Blank Hoodie Template

Last spring I sent a client a hoodie mockup with the chest print sitting roughly an inch too low. They spotted it in ten seconds. That slip cost me a reshoot of samples and a week of production time, and it happened because I was designing on a flat JPEG instead of a proper blank hoodie template. If you sell apparel online, print for a DTG shop, or show designs to buyers before committing to inventory, the file you build on matters as much as the artwork. I keep about forty templates now, sorted by brand and silhouette.

What separates a usable blank hoodie template from a pretty one

Terminology gets sloppy in this space. What you’re actually buying or building is a layered file, typically PSD at 300 DPI, that maps a garment’s printable area onto either a flat canvas or a semi-realistic mockup. The versions worth keeping ship with separate layers for fabric weave, fold shadows, drawcords, and the kangaroo pocket edge.

Layer order is the whole point. Artwork sits beneath the shadow layer so it picks up the garment’s wrinkles; put it on top and the print looks pasted on. I learned that after approving a 500-unit screen print run where the mockup looked convincing but the placement drifted half an inch low on every piece.

Which file type to reach for

FormatBest forWatch out for
PSD, 300 DPI, 4000px+Realistic mockups, DTG previews, client approvalsFiles balloon past 200 MB; flatten a smart object and you lose color swaps
SVG or AI vectorCut-and-sew patterns, screen print separationsZero fabric realism; you map seams and grain, not texture
Transparent PNGMarketplace listings, quick chat approvalsNo shadow layer, so dark artwork vanishes on dark garments

Smart objects are what let you drop in a new design without rebuilding shadows. Keep the body color on its own hue/saturation layer and you can show someone the same logo on sage, bone, and washed black in under a minute.

Placement specs I trust

Numbers shift with silhouette, so check the supplier’s size chart, but these hold across most standard pullovers.

  • Full front print area: about 12 by 16 inches, centered
  • Left chest: 3.5 to 4 inches wide, top edge 7 to 9 inches below the shoulder seam
  • Back print: 12 by 14 inches, starting 3 to 4 inches below the collar
  • Sleeves: 2 by 2 inches minimum, or the print wraps and distorts

Embroidery changes the math. A stitched logo needs roughly 0.25 inches of clearance from any seam, because backing and stitch pull distort the fabric at the edges. Digitizers also want vector outlines rather than a flattened PNG, so your file needs a vector layer if the same design heads to a decorating shop.

Why dark garments break templates

A 100% cotton black hoodie needs a white underbase for DTG, and poly blends need different pretreatment entirely. If your template shows a bright print on black with no underbase simulation, the client expects a result the printer cannot deliver. I now name files black-underbase-required.psd so nobody forgets.

⚠️ Note: Check the print area on a 2XL or 3XL before you approve a design. The garment scales up; the print does not. A chest logo that reads well on a medium can look lost on a 3XL.

Building your own blank hoodie template when nothing fits

Stock templates rarely match niche cuts like a cropped boxy fit or 500 GSM heavyweight fleece. Photograph a garment you own flat on a neutral backdrop, shoot at f/8 with even light, then trace the seams and pocket outline in Photoshop. Two hours of setup gives you a template nobody else has.

Keep a version history as well. I append date and garment weight to every filename, which saved me when a supplier quietly changed shoulder width between orders.

Before you send the next proof, drop the artwork in at 25% zoom and squint. If the print disappears into the fabric folds at that size, it will disappear on the real garment too. Fix the contrast there instead of reaching for a filter after the sample arrives.
